T4C delivered meals for kids to 94 food banks

Trucks for Change (T4C) network carriers have delivered 112,840 kid-friendly food packs to 94 food banks across Canada during a two-month national campaign, delivering meals for children as part of Food Banks Canada’s After the Bell initiative. This effort aims to help feed more than 14,000 children weekly from July to August when school-based meal programs are unavailable.

Carriers delivered the packs from coast to coast to coast – from Charlottetown, P.E.I., to Inuvik, N.W.T., and Vancouver Island, B.C.

Over 50 volunteers from the T4C network gathered in May to help assemble the food packs during Food Banks Canada’s annual After the Bell food packing in Mississauga, Ont. The network is an official partner of the program, which the network has supported for several consecutive years.

“Trucks for Change sponsors and transporters are eager to support the After the Bell initiative because hunger affects so many families in every community across Canada,” said Betsy Sharples, executive director of Trucks for Change network, in a news release. “The trucking industry is uniquely positioned to assist this program given that our carrier partners can deliver these kids’ food packs to virtually every food bank accessible by road.”

Kirstin Beardsley, chief executive officer of Food Banks Canada, added that the number of families experiencing food insecurity is soaring across the country, impacting children significantly.

“The need for us to join forces and work together is imperative, especially now, as school-based meal and snack programs are not available during the summer,” she said. “This is why we appreciate our partnership with the Trucks for Change Network and are grateful for all they have done to help children across Canada have a better summer in 2024.”
